Personal Development

Across Salterns Academy Trust, personal development is central to how we prepare young people for life beyond school. Our schools are committed to developing confident, resilient and responsible students who understand themselves, respect others and contribute positively to society.
Personal development is delivered through curriculum learning, enrichment, student leadership and the everyday culture of our schools.

What This Looks Like in Our Schools:

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) underpins personal development across the Trust.

At Admiral Lord Nelson School, PSHE sits within a wider Personal Development curriculum that includes Aspiring Futures education, careers guidance and the promotion of British Values, helping students make safe, informed choices and plan for their future.
At Trafalgar School, personal development is strengthened through dedicated Personal Development Days, exploring themes such as relationships, health, justice, careers and future pathways, alongside a Gatsby‑benchmarked careers programme.
At Mayfield School, personal development is embedded through regular timetabled provision, assemblies and enrichment, with a strong focus on wellbeing, relationships, living in the wider world and inclusion.

Enrichment, Character and Wider Experience
All Salterns schools provide a wide range of enrichment opportunities that help students develop character, confidence and independence.
Our Schools offer a rich programme of trips, clubs and cultural experiences to build students’ cultural capital, communication skills and leadership. We promote personal development through student leadership roles, extra‑curricular activities, work experience and activities weeks that broaden horizons and raise aspirations

Student Voice and Leadership
Listening to students and involving them in school life is a consistent feature across the Trust.
Schools use student councils, leadership roles and structured opportunities for student voice to help young people develop confidence, responsibility and a sense of active citizenship.

A Shared Trust Commitment
While each school delivers personal development in ways that reflect its own community, Salterns Academy Trust provides a shared commitment to inclusion, wellbeing, aspiration and opportunity. Our aim is that every student leaves our schools not only academically prepared, but personally equipped to succeed in the next stage of their education and adult life.
